Litha – Summer Solstice
Litha, also known as Midsummer or the Summer Solstice, marks the highest point of the sun’s journey across the sky. Occurring annually around June 20–22 in the Northern Hemisphere, it celebrates the longest day and the shortest night of the year. It is a festival of peak vitality, passion, abundance, and illumination.
The Celts: To ancient Celtic peoples, Midsummer was a time to honor the sun god at his peak strength. They believed the veil between our world and the spirit realm was incredibly thin on this night—second only to Samhain—allowing fairies and nature spirits to cross over and cause mischief.
The Romans: The solstice coincided with the festival of Fors Fortuna, the goddess of luck, and was a time to honor Juno, the goddess of marriage and childbirth (which is why June remains a traditional month for weddings).
The Norse: Scandinavian peoples used Midsummer as a vital time to meet for legal matters, trade, and community gatherings (Things). They lit massive bonfires to mimic the sun, ward off evil spirits, and bless the upcoming harvest.
Christianization (St. John’s Eve): As Christianity spread, the pagan celebration of the solstice was adapted into the Christian calendar as St. John’s Day (June 24), celebrating the birth of John the Baptist. Many of the old fire and water traditions were seamlessly carried over into this feast day.
The Myth of the Oak King and the Holly King
In many modern Pagan and Wiccan traditions, the solstice tells the story of an eternal battle between two twin rulers: the Oak King (lord of the waxing year, light, and growth) and the Holly King (lord of the waning year, darkness, and rest).
At Litha, the Oak King is at the absolute height of his power. However, this is the very moment he is defeated by the Holly King. From Midsummer until Yule (the Winter Solstice), the Holly King rules, and the light slowly diminishes. This myth beautifully illustrates the cyclical nature of life, reminding us that even in our highest moments of triumph, the seeds of retreat are planted.
Common Traditions & Rituals
Fire is the definitive element of Litha. Historically, people lit massive bonfires on hilltops to strengthen the sun as it prepared to wane.
- Embers for Protection: Farmers would drive their cattle through the smoke of the bonfires to protect them from disease, and take charred embers back to their hearths to protect their homes from lightning and bad luck.
- Modern Practice: Lighting a gold or yellow candle at noon on the solstice is a common way to invite the sun’s vitalizing energy into your personal space.
Plants gathered on the Solstice are historically believed to possess doubled magical and medicinal potency.
- St. John’s Wort: The ultimate Litha herb. Its bright yellow flowers bloom perfectly in time for Midsummer. Hung over doorways, it was believed to ward off negative spirits and brings vivid, prophetic dreams.
- Roses and Lavender: Representing the peak fragrance of summer, these are heavily used in love spells, handfastings, and beauty rituals during this time.
Because fire can become overwhelming, Litha heavily incorporates water to balance the intense solar heat.
- Dew Magic: Gathering morning dew from plants on the solstice was traditionally thought to heal eye ailments and grant youthful radiance to the skin.
- Ritual Baths: Bathing in natural springs, oceans, or taking a ritual bath infused with summer blossoms is a modern way to wash away stagnant spring energy and align with summer’s flow.
Day – Sunday lends energies to efforts focused on goals, wellness, merriment, personal finances, career advancement, produce or crops, legal matters, “guy stuff”, and business/professional partnerships.
Zodiac – The moon starts out in Virgo today. The moon in Virgo lends energies to efforts around employment, intellectual matters, health and dietary concerns.
At 1:33pm Eastern Time, the moon moves out of Virgo and goes Void of Course.
At 4:55pm Eastern Time, the moon moves into Libra. The moon in Libra lends energies towards artistic work, justice, court cases, partnerships and unions, mental stimulation and karmic, spiritual or emotional balance.
Moon – Today, the moon reaches First Quarter phase at 5:56pm Eastern Time. This is the half way point between the New moon and the Full moon. As it is still a Waxing moon, it’s great energy to draw in, manifest, grow, increase and attract things.
So today – Take the morning and mid-day off to rest, cleanse yourself and your space, and recharge. This evening when the moon moves into Libra, combine the Waxing Moon with Libra to amplify efforts to find balance (karmic, spiritual or emotional).
Whatever you choose to do today, be clear with your intention and mindful with your words. Happy Manifesting!
