Beltane: The Fire of the Heart
Beltane is a Gaelic fire festival marking the “May Day” peak of Spring and the beginning of the pastoral summer. Situated halfway between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice, it is a celebration of fertility, vitality, and the blossoming of life. While Samhain (at the opposite end of the year) honors the transition into darkness and the ancestors, Beltane honors the transition into the sun and the raw power of creation.
The Meaning & Mythology
The Sacred Union: Traditionally, Beltane celebrates the marriage of the May Queen (the Earth) and the Green Man (the Sun). Their union is what coaxes the flowers to bloom and the crops to grow.
The Thinning Veil: Much like its autumn counterpart, the “veil” between worlds is said to be thinnest at Beltane. It is a time when the Fae are most active and the boundaries between the physical and spiritual realms blur.
Historical Traditions
The Bale-Fires: Ancient Celts lit two massive bonfires (“Bel-fires”) and drove cattle between them to ensure health and protection for the coming year. People would jump over the embers to purify their spirits and invite good fortune.
The Maypole: A dance of balance and weaving, the Maypole represents the union of the masculine and feminine energies, physically binding the intentions of the community into a colorful tapestry of growth.
May Dew: Folklore suggests that washing one’s face in the first morning dew of May 1st preserves youth and brings a “radiant glow” from the faerie realm.
Why it Matters Today
Beltane is an invitation to ignite your passions. It asks: What is blooming within you? What desires are you ready to bring into the light? It is the perfect day to charge your tools, set intentions for abundance, and celebrate the sheer joy of being alive.
Day – Friday lends energies to efforts around Romance, love, friendship, dating, pleasure, partners, unions and fertility.
Zodiac – The Moon in Scorpio lends energies to sexual matters, power, psychic growth, secrets and fundamental transformations.
Moon – Our moon goes FULL today at 1:23pm Eastern Time which lends energies to increasing intuition, boosting rituals and spellwork, and increasing your concentration.
Insight: Since May 1st, 2026, also hosts a Full Moon in Scorpio, this Beltane is particularly deep. It’s not just about the flowers on the surface; it’s about the powerful roots and transformations happening in the shadows that make that growth possible.
